Zondagse dracht

The Sunday dress, or the “coffin”, was worn when one went to church, wedding, funeral or something similar.
The gentlemen wore a black suit. There was little decoration on it. Sometimes only a watch with chain. Furthermore, the gentlemen wore black woolen stockings in white sanded clogs, a black cap on the head and a “goa stick” in the hand. The handle of the goa stick was usually decorated with an artful braid of horsehair and goose pins.
The women wore a black skirt, with many petticoats underneath and a decent (white cotton) long underpants.
Typical Enschede are the colored jackets. In the area and other places people wore black.
On the feet, as well as the men, black stockings, white sanded clogs and on the head the cutting cap, on which clipping cap bells of gold or silver hung.
Jewelry was often given as a gift when reaching the age of 18 or when getting married. However, corals and other jewelry were not worn as widely in our region as in other provinces.

De knipmuts

The best thing about the dress is the cutting cap, with the hat bells attached. The tail consisted of (brussels) lace and stiptule. From this one could also see how rich one was. The more lace, the richer one was. In the second half of the 17th century, the “corned hat” originated in Paris. This was worn by well-to-do people and then came into fashion here. The Dutch women found that loose side but nothing and, for the sake of “order and cleanliness”, they put the loose lace neatly in the groove with starch and carcass wire. Around 1820, the hat was established throughout Overijssel and Gelderland among the peasantry, combined with its own skirt and lap dress. Then the name cutting cap came into use. From that time on, changes were gradually made, creating local differences.
